When my inbox pinged this week bringing me details of Citroën 2CV specialist and manufacturer of the new Drewgard Roadster, I noted the name of the man behind the project, Andrew Gardner, which well and truly got the Hole grey matter whirring!

Then I remembered. I’d last met Andrew some 18-years ago when produced the CeeVee Sport, his original sportscar design using the Gallic stalwart for donor purposes, which although ultimately remained stillborn I always thought it had promise.

The intervening years (where does time go?) has seen Andrew develop and grow his business specialising in all things related to the 2CV. So much so that he is one of the UK’s foremost destinations for owners seeking parts and upgrades. He can supply most components and also has a couple of interesting – and patented – upgrade packages.

The first is a fiendishly clever Front Suspension Swivel hub kingpin-to-sealed balljoint conversion, which sharpens up steering considerably and reduces the almost continual need to replace kingpins on a 2CV. It’s available in standard ride height and also a lowered option. This package costs £775.

The second upgrade is a track rod end conversion kit, which costs £265. Adapt your 2CV or 2CV-based kitcar with the two and you’ll really notice the improvement they bring. Andrew can also supply rebuilt standard 2CV engines from around £425, refurbed steering racks at £75 and a rebuilt and upgraded A-series 602cc unit, which is completely stripped down, checked and cleaned.

It is then fitted with new pistons, barrels, a fast road camshaft, new oil pipes and a new oil cooler. The combustion chamber is also cleaned and polished as are the chambers. Andrew charges just £750 for these.

This brings us to his new Drewgard Roadster kitcar. Yes, it is based on 2CV (the one with the A-series chassis) and is the natural successor to Andrew’s original CeeVee Sport, although differs a lot from that car.

It features a widened track, anti-roll bar, lowered suspension and both of Drewgard’s patented suspension upgrade packages. A bodykit package comes in at £2191 and is available now.

Although the 2CV hasn’t been made for some 25-years you can still buy everything brand new off the shelf thanks to a thriving scene surrounding the cars including new chassis and engines. Indeed, companies such as The 2CV Centre and 2CV City can basically build you a new 2CV or completely restore your existing one to ‘as new’ condition.

Finally, Andrew has another – non-2CV – project on the go called the Drewgard Coupé, which uses a variety of components including Jaguar XJS, Chevy V8 and GM 4L60 automatic gearbox. The intention is for this to be a grand touring car and although not available yet, Andrew welcomes your enquiries.
