IMY DAD HAD ONE OF THESE – AND AN NSU RO80!

This item reminded me of my childhood. I recall loads of very unusual cars that my mechanic dad worked on and owned at one time or another. One of them, an NSU RO80, was a lovely car, comfortable, rode beautifully and because of its Light Metallic Turquoise colour gave me a lifelong love of the colour!

It was a speedy thing too as long as the Claus Luthe-designed car’s twin rotor Wankel engine was working! That car cost my old man a lot of money when the rotor tips melded themselves to each other while we were on the M40 at Beaconsfield one day.

Anyway, another highlight of the RO80 for me was its Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo with its stark East German look and crackle finish when I see a picture of one I instantly remember that car.

Fans of retro might be interested to hear that Blaupunkt has revived the Frankfurt which looks just like it always did although now has modern tech built into it and features DAB+, Bluetooth and even a 3in digital display.

These stereos were top of the shop back in the seventies and were often found in Rollers, Bentleys and many top end German makes. Three finishes are available and they cost around £699.
