A STICKY SITUATION
Market leader in epoxy resins, adhesives and other specialist products, J-B Weld, has been at the forefront of bonding technology for more than fifty years and has become a staple in professionals’ toolkits.
When thinking of how to bond two parts together, many technicians may think of soldering or welding them, but, what if there’s an easier solution? J-B Weld has an impressive range of products that are suitable for technicians in a host of areas, including bumper repair, fuel tank repair and even a cracked windscreen. Whether it’s metal, plastic or on a high-temperature surface, J-B Weld has the solution.
The J-B Weld Original Twin Tubes is a two-part epoxy system that provides strong, lasting repairs to metal and plastic. It has a tensile strength of 5020 PSI and sets to a hard bond overnight, it can withstand temperatures up to 290°C when fully cured, making it an ideal product for automotive applications.
Another product that should be kept in a technician’s toolbox is the SteelStik, which is a hand-mixable, steel-reinforced, non-rusting epoxy putty that quickly repairs or rebuilds anything made of metal. After mixing, it forms an industrial-strength polymer compound that can be moulded into shapes or used to build up, patch and repair steel components. It sets in between three to five minutes and after 60 minutes, it can be drilled, tapped, machined, ground, filed or painted. It is rated at a tensile strength of 4000 PSI and will withstand temperatures up to 150°C.
For bumpers and plastic repair, technicians should consider the Plastic Bonder Syringe, which is a quick-setting, two-part, urethane adhesive system that provides strong and lasting repairs and works on thermoset, carbon fibre composites, thermoplastics, coated metals, concrete and more.
J-B Weld also has more component-specific products, for example, the ExhaustWeld Total Exhaust Repair Wrap, which is a high-strength fibreglass wrap, with a specially formulated resin for high-temperature resistant repairs. It works on the entire exhaust system, can withstand temperatures up to 595°C and cures with or without heat to repair, seal and insulate the exhaust system, making a time-consuming job a bit easier.
Finally, ExtremeHeat is formulated to allow for repairs to iron, steel and metal in high-temperature environments (540°C). When fully cured, this metallic compound can be drilled, machined or sanded. It is great for repairing cracks, small gaps, seam connections or holes in exhaust manifolds, pipe connections, catalytic converters, among others. This product is water-based, non-flammable and contains no solvents or VOC (volatile organic compounds). Alternative to the ExtremeHeat is HighHeat, which is a hand-mixable epoxy putty stick specifically formulated to bond and repair materials that will be exposed to high temperatures. It cures to a tough, hard bond with little to no shrinkage.
