XCS Designs has launched a new model called the 427 Capello. This carefully specced sportscar offers enthusiasts the chance to buy a turnkey, factory-built Cobra replica for £59,995 registered and on the road, complete with 12 month’s warranty and built using completely new parts, including the entire chassis and drivetrain.

This entry-level model has been introduced into the range at the request of many potential customers, looking for the unrivalled quality and resale value of a ‘works’ car, but with an eye on value for money and affordability.

That said, the spec of this new ‘Baby Snake’ is no poor relation when compared to XCS’s six-figure range toppers. Based around the company’s ‘box frame’ triangulated chassis, complete with extensive cross-bracing and crash reinforcement, the Capello uses the tried-and-tested Ford 302 V8 motor, producing a healthy 235bhp with a most useful 317 lb ft of torque.

Not only is this arguably enough for all but the most talented of pedallers, purists might actually prefer the authenticity of using a Ford motor in their Cobra homage. It’s probably what ‘old Shel’ would have wanted, after all.

Shifting is taken care of with Ford’s ‘Super Duty’ T5 transmission, offering a slick and engaging five-speed shift with a great choice of ratios that perfectly match the 302’s grunt. As the perfect ‘everyday’ set-up, the XCS 427 Capello package offers exactly what’s needed – and nothing more.

Each bodyshell comes out of the mould in a gelcoat finish, which is then polished to perfection. Because of this, no additional prep or paintwork is required, meaning that as long as you fancy either a black, white or grey finish, you’d don’t have to pay for anything extra.

Of course, owners looking for something unique can order any paint finish their heart – or wallet – desires, but for those looking to get out on the road in style and maybe worry about all of that at a later date, then this is the perfect compromise.

Similarly, the interior is a simple, stripped-out affair. Comfortable, naked GRP buckets are augmented by simpler vinyl doorcards, dash and neatly trimmed carpeting. While it’s perhaps not the deeply quilted, leather-bound luxury of XCS’s flagship models, but a very nice, understated and unfussy place to sit while enjoying many long and happy miles to the tune of one of Ford’s greatest hits.

Commenting on the new model, XCS boss Harvey Rice said: “The 427 Capello has been launched in direct response to requests for an affordable turnkey car with a factory-backed warranty. While many of our clients very much enjoy the self-build process, there are many others that would like a sensibly priced, affordable car that’s built, registered and simply ready to enjoy. We’ve carefully chosen proven componentry that’s focussed on driving enjoyment and everyday usability, rather than out-and-out performance. The result is a truly charming car that’s perhaps even closer to the original Cobra ethos than anything else out there.”
