SCAMP MK4X4J AN EXCITING NEW ARRIVAL

2026 is fast becoming a good year for new models or revised and resurrected old favourites. Best for many a year. The Scamp Motor Company is one of them and is one of the UK’s best-loved kitcar manufacturers with a history dating back to 1969, when a chap caleld Robert Mandry, a commercial Christmas tree grower from Surrey launched it.

A chap called Andrew MacLean acquired the project in 1987 and owned it right through to 2024, when South Wales-based friends and Scamp enthusiasts Matt Parker and Robin Waite acquired the project.

They made a welcome debut at the recent National Kit Car Show at Malvern and were warmly greeted. As was their all-new Mk4x4J based on Gen 3 Suzuki Jimny (1998-2018) running gear.

The new Mk4x4J’s styling can trace its history back to a set of drawings that Robert Mandry did. It clearly retains its Scamp family styling but features a more raked windscreen and more sloping bonnet line.

After 37 years of involvement Andrew is still involved, pssing on his knowledge and guidance, while several of the new Mk4x4Js were built at his workshop in Crawley Down, West Sussex, while Matt and Robin also have a Scamp Mk5 in development.

Exciting times for an industry stalwart and we’ll be doing a feature on the Mk4x4J in the near future.
