Fitting new wheels and then making them fill the arches of your kitcar is a practice about as old as automotive modification itself, one that’s traditionally been typified by inelegant, oversized wheels with bolt-holes drilled at approximate locations.

Regular wheel spacers simply haven’t evolved in-line with car tuning as a whole, and when you consider just how significant wheels and their fixing systems are from a safety point of view, that’s simply unacceptable (I had a spacer let go at 120mph+ at Bruntingthorpe once. It ain’t clever…).

Fortunately, there’s now a far more sophisticated way of going about widening your car’s track, and it comes courtesy of ST Suspensions’ DZX track extension system, something Awesome GTI near Manchester is now able to offer its customers – the first outlet of its type in the UK.

The DZX track extension system is neatly housed in a steel cabinet, and the whole set up is very versatile. Made up of a 36 spacer discs, 45 ST adaptor rings and innovative fixings, the cabinet has the potential to cater to a massive 19,000 different combinations, meaning that you’re well covered no matter what you drive. Not only is it hugely adaptable, the fact that all the required hardware is stored in one easy to access, meticulously ordered ST cabinet ensures that finding the correct discs and rings is the work of moments.

The layout of the spacers themselves is well worth looking at in greater detail, particularly as two distinct versions makeup the cabinet. The first boasts a range of between five and 25mm per wheel in 2.5mm increments, the second 25-35mm per wheel in 5mm increments. These give you huge scope to adjust the track of your car, with the option of trialling certain set-ups and spacer widths in a simple and straightforward manner. Being spacers, each disc also sports multi-pattern holes intended to fit up to twelve different PCD patterns each, meaning the vast majority of fitment options are catered for by this one cabinet.

The cabinet also contains fifteen hub-centric spigots catering to the most commonly encountered centre-bores, all colour-coded to make the fitment process even easier. These composite spigots don’t just look fantastic, they’re the product of an intense design process focussed on eliminating any trace of ‘play’ or excess space between the hub and the spacer itself, evidence of which can be seen in their tapered design. It goes without saying that this is not something that can be said of regular, ‘common or garden’ spigot rings.

There’s another clever aspect to ST Suspensions DZX cabinet, and that’s how it enables wheel spacers to be fitted to any car no matter whether they’re running wheel studs or wheel bolts. The cabinet contains provisions for both fixing methods, with either ST shaft lug nuts or ST extended wheel bolts to enable it to cater for all makes and models. Factor in how swiftly the spigots can be added or removed to suit the wheel hubs of specific cars, and it becomes all too clear why the ST Suspensions DZX system is such a big deal.

The installation process is simplicity itself; select the hub-centric spigot ring that matches your car’s centre-bore, then insert it into the appropriately sized spacer disc. The pairing of hub-centric spigot and multi-fitment spacer effectively results in a single component that’s tailored to your specific make and model of car, eliminating any trace of play between the wheel and hub assembly. Depending on whether or not your car has wheel studs or wheel bolts, the wheel can then be securely mounted using the appropriate fixing mechanism, and all without having to look to a third party manufacturer for extended wheel studs or bolts.

Put simply, ST Suspensions DZX mounting system allows for the installation of spacers that fit perfectly and without so much as the slightest trace of wheel vibration or movement through the steering wheel, while its versatile construction means that the track of any car to be extended from 10-50mm per axle. It’s the best way of truly perfecting the relationship between wheel, arch and hub, and it’s now available through Awesome GTI.
