Here’s a cracking book on a very evocative motorsport subject – Le Mans.
Each June, squadrons of UK enthusiasts many of them kitcar drivers, make the pilgrimage to La Sarthe to soak up the wonderful atmosphere at the legendary 24-hour race.
This book by respected motorsport journalist, Quentin Spurring, covers arguably the greatest period in the race’s history, certainly for us ‘forty something’s’.
Dunlop Curve, the Esses, Tertre Rouge, Mulsanne Straight, over one minute spent at over 200mph, Mulsanne Corner, Indianapolis, Arnage, the sweeps at Maison Blanche, these famous names on the public roads of the circuit de la Sarthe are deeply iconic and this defining decade for the Le Mans 24-hours started with six victories for Ferrari followed by four consecutive triumphs for Ford with the GT40.
This was also the period when motor manufacturers threw their hat into the ring and in addition to Ferrari and Ford the likes of Alfa Romeo, Matra, Renault and Porsche all took part at this time. Indeed, some 50 makers produced cars that were raced at Le Mans, with 450 drivers in total taking on this considerable challenge of endurance. A very nice book, indeed.
