Danny Bryant’s Red Eye Band – Just As I Am
As a devout Bryant fan, I eagerly awaited this his seventh album, and have to say that I love it. Described as his most complete and varied work to date, it took quite a while for it to sink into my senses, but once it did, crikey did it latch itself to my brain. A few long walks and iPod listens soon made it essential listening.
Kicking off with the stonking ‘Shut Out The Light’ and burning into ‘Blues Ffor Buddy’ (for Buddy Guy of course) the guitar playing is incendiary with searing, burning solos and crunchy rhythm playing from Bryant’s beautiful Fret-king guitar.
As a guitarist, I’d place Bryant up there with Britain’s finest, in the box marked ‘Larry Miller’, ‘Ray Hatfield’ and ‘Barry ‘Slim’ Martin’ and his general feel, dexterity and finger speed are incredible. No wasted notes from Bryant. Every one counts.
In terms of musical style, Danny is his own man, although there are Walter Trout elements in the mix. No bad thing for me.
Every track is superb. No fillers, although the possible stand out for me is ‘Master of Disaster’.
