We’re firm believers in the virtues of diesel engine use in………kitcars and there’s definitely a growing number finding their way into various models. One area however, where modern common rail diesel engines are very complex is their engine management systems, which are critical for the engine to operate.
Without the engine control unit (ECU) a common rail diesel engine will not start and run. The technology is very different to that of petrol engines with the fuel pressure in the diesel common rail ranging from 200 to 1600-Bar, varying dynamically as the engine speed and load changes, supplied by an engine mounted electronically control mechanical pump.
This compares to just 3-Bar for a typical petrol engine from its electric pump. Fuel injection timing and quantity is critical in the diesel with up to five separate injection events per cylinder per cycle.
Each of these injections must be individually timed to less than ¼ crankshaft degree. To enable this precise control, the injectors are driven with up to 100 Volts and 20 Amps.
The ECU in a mass production common rail diesel vehicle is inexorably linked with many other modules in the car, which communicate with each other on several networks, to share information from various sensors around the engine, transmission, chassis and cabin. Without these other modules, the ECU will not function. The resulting situation is that it is virtually impossible to take a common rail diesel out of a production vehicle and use it in another application.
That is until now, as Specialist Components launch their unique Hurricane stand-alone programmable common rail diesel engine management system. Initially produced specifically for Ford TDCi 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8-litre diesel engines (which are also used by PSA group in various Peugeots and Citroens), the Hurricane system controls all of the engine parameters. It is a fully plug and play solution, pre-calibrated and with no modifications required to the engine. Tied in with a variable geometry turbocharger, the 1.6 TDCi engine delivers a high power output of 109bhp at 4000rpm and an equally healthy 184lb/ft torque at 1750rpm.
Ideal for kitcars, the Hurricane system (consisting of the SC Typhoon ECU and an external SC Injector Driver Module) enables simple installation of TDCi engines. It only requires an electrical supply to function, and outputs all of the necessary auxiliary functions e.g. tachometer and fuel pump relay. A PC can be connected to the Hurricane system via SC’s bespoke USB interface and software, enabling easy visual diagnostics of all the engine sensors and actuators.
The Hurricane system has been 100 percent developed and designed by SC’s engineers at their base in Norfolk. It is available to purchase directly from SC Components, or together with a brand new Ford TDCi engine from Power Torque Engineering Ltd.

With so many kitcars running older, pre-cat engines……….modern engine oil isn’t completely ideal for them. For instance, synthetic lubricants have to do their job without causing damage to sensitive catalytic converters and as a result that means a lack of zinc and phosphorous-based compounds (ZDDP).
This means that older engines, designed to run on a different generation of lubricants pre-1990 are often lacking these anti-wear qualities.

Webcon has just announced a new universal…………Wasted Spark Coil Pack suitable for 4-cylinder distributor-less applications. This remotely mounted coil pack serves two spark plugs (in two cylinders) at the same time, using the ‘wasted spark’ system. In this arrangement the coil generates two sparks per cycle to both the cylinders. The fuel in the cylinder that is nearing the end of its compression stroke is ignited, whereas the spark in its companion that is nearing the end of its exhaust stroke has no effect.
The wasted spark system is more reliable than a single coil and distributor system and cheaper than a coil-on-plug system. A purpose designed mounting kit is also available for use with the coil pack.
