Here’s a product that trackday attendees at Castle Combe circuit might well be aware of…

Some years ago Merlin Motorsport designed their own simple supplementary silencer/Muffler. It’s a round box of 4in diameter, 8in long and has a 2in perforation in the bore and is packed with E-Glass.

Merlin’s technicians weld a short length of exhaust pipe at one end and slip it over the exhaust. The end cap on the other end is tacked on with four welds so it’s possible to grind out the weld and repack the E-Glass. See the MERLIN MUFFLER here.

The Muffler can fit over the exhaust, in which case it’s a good idea to cut a slot, which allows it to slide over the exhaust and secure with a clamp. It can also be fitted inside the exhaust and secured by drilling a small hole and using a self-tapper. If you do this the scrutineer will require you to fit a hose clip around the pipe and over the self-tapper to make sure that it does not vibrate out.

A recent happy customer of Merlin’s was at the Spring Action Day at Castle Combe. He participated on-track with his modified Vauxhall VX220 complete with a Saab turbo engine – built himself.

After failing the noise test in the morning and feeling disheartened when the scrutineer told him he couldn’t get on track (after travelling all the way from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire!) Merlin was able to help him get back on the track with one of their Mufflers. A good job, well done.
